Senate queries tax waivers granted to MTN
Senate queries tax waivers
granted to MTN, LNG
NDIDI OKAFOR,
Abuja
THE Senate
has queried the tax waivers granted to MTN, one of the Global System of Mobile
Communications (GSM) service providers, and the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)
companies.
The Senate Committee on Public Accounts
has asked for details of the exemption policy.
Chairman of the committee, Senator Mamman
Ali, had told the chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS), Miss Ifueko
Omoigui, to submit to the committee by next week, details of the tax exemption
for MTN and LNG despite the huge profits they make.
Miss Omoigui had, while briefing the
committee on the activities of FIRS, disclosed that the two companies tagged
"pioneer companies" have been exempted from paying tax for five years.
Apparently irked by the disclosure, the committee asked the chairman of FIRS to
furnish it with details of the exemption next week so that it can ascertain
whether or not the action was proper and within the law.
Senator Ali said "we want the details of
the tax exemption for MTN and others to know whether it was a matter of policy
or law."
Lamenting the problem of under funding of
FIRS however, its chairman, Omogui appealed to the committee on public accounts
to intervene so that it can function properly.
She further told the Senate that Federal
Government agencies and ministries were yet to remit to FIRS N14 billion being
tax collected from its workers.
According to her, the National Electric
Power Authority (NEPA) is the worst culprit as it is yet to remit to FIRS, N6.5
billion.
Responding, Senator Ali vowed to ensure
that the trend is reversed and defaulters brought to book.
Senator Ali wondered why NEPA and NITEL
uses force sometimes to collect money from customers would indulge in
withholding taxes collected from their workers on behalf of the FIRS.
FIRS boss also told the Mamman Ali -
Committee that a tax policy reform was in the offing and called for the support
of the committee.
