Obasanjo writes Reps, demands amendment of Trade Union Act
AARON OSSAI, Abuja PRESIDENT OlusegunObasanjo has formallywritten to the House of Representatives seeking the amendment of the Trade Union Act. In the letter addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Masari, and read on the floor of the House on Tuesday, Obasanjo said there was the need to amend the Trade Unions Act in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution. He said chapter 4 of the 1999 Constitution guaranteed all Nigerian citizens the right to choice in their political and social activities as well as the natural liberties and rights. Obasanjo stated that for Nigeria to make progress, there was need for continuous nature, strengthen and widen the process of democracy anchored on the desire to build strong and sustainable foundations for democratic consolidation. Speaking further, the President said it was also necessary to amend the Trade Unions Act because according to him, the democracy that the International Labour Organisation (ILO) mandated all labour organisations to practice was ignored in the case of Nigerias present labour law. According to him the government at that time wanted to strengthen labour along undemocratic lines thereby breaching the rules and values of democracy. "Also the government was trying t save labour from the divided world of East and West that had precipitated division, suspicious, corruption, waste, even violence in labour movement," he added. He said because democracy had taken over the patterns of political and other engagements and interactions in the global system, he proposed the amendment of the Trade Unions Act in order to promote the democratisation of labour. "The amendment would further strengthen labour, enhance choice for all Nigerian workers in the true spirit of the constitution, comply with ILO requirements and consolidate the values of accountability and participation," he added. . .
