June 12: IBB must apologise to Nigerians, says SoyinkaGODWIN ISENYO, Kaduna NOBEL laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, hasasked former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd), to apologise to Nigerians over the annulment of the June 12 Presidential election presumed to have been won by the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola. Addressing newsmen in Kaduna at a forum occasion organised by Northern civil society organisations, Soyinka said Babangida must apologise to the nation before embarking on the mission before embarking onthe missionto return to Aso Rock in 2007 as speculated. Soyinka, who disclosed that the pro-democracy group in the country was grooming a "preferred" candidate that would take over from President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2007, described "Nigerians as kind and accommodating", as such Babangida must apologise in order to start his campaign for the Presidency on a clean slate. According to Soyinka, Babangida must apologise to the nation for a number of things especially for faulting the democratic wishes of the nation. "The results of June 12 were not the result of one section alone. It was an assault on our democratic aspiration", he stated, pointing out that "this will be the beginning, an attempt to wipe the slate clean". Soyinka added that after General Babangida must have tender his apology to the nation, "then he will start presenting his credentials as a candidate like new applicant". The Nobel laureate who was billed to visit prisons in the state as part of the event to mark his 70th birthday but was disallowed by prison authority on the account that there was "no notice" from the organisers, said the former military president should not believe that as a former ruler, "he will have easy" way to the presidency in 2007. Said he: "If he (IBB) wants to start on a clean to slate, he must apologise to this nation. In fact, for a number of things especially for faulting the democratic wishes of the nation. "This will be the beginning. Nigerians are kind and accommodating people generally. But ridind on wings of having ruled this nation before, is not the way of going about proving your democratic credentials. "That apply to all former generals and incumbents. They should understand that Nigerians are politically sophisticated. That is all I have to say", he added.
