Police, Airforce mens clash:Committee submits report, calls for end to accidental discharge

SOLA ADEKOLA, SADE AYODELE

TWO weeks after theFederal Government setup a committee to probe the clash between air force and policemen in Lagos, the panel on Tuesday submitted its report and called for an end to the spate of accidental discharges in the country.

Receiving the report on the governments behalf, Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Roland Oritsejafor, assured that the committees findings and recommendation would be studied and acted upon.

Oritsejafor lamented the high rate of death through accidental discharges, saying they were becoming embarrassing to government.

Hinting that the government had started working on putting an end to the ugly incident, the minister said there was no going back on the on-going reform in the armed forces and frowned at any act of indiscipline.

He warned that government would not tolerate any act capable of turning the equipment bought with tax payers money to killer instruments.

According to Oritsejafor, the report if approved by the government would go a long way in forestalling a recurrence of military, police clashes.

The minister, however, hinted that during the investigations, it was discovered that a strong espirit de corp existed among armed forces personnel.

He thanked members of the committee comprising Air Force, Army, Navy, police and some civilians for a job well done.

Some parts of Lagos State erupted in violence between July 6 and 7 when a policeman was alleged to have shot dead an air force man.

The development led to the breakdown of law and order with the two at each others throat.

To ascertain the cause of the incidentand forestall a recurrence, the committee was set up to probe the clash.

The body of the air force man killed in the clash is still in the mortuary to give room for investigations.
