Umuahia North legislators fight over imposition of leader

UGOCHUKWU EKE, Umuahia

IT was a disgraceful scene at the Umuahia North LocalGovernment office Abia State on Monday, when two factions of the legislative arm engaged each other in a free-for-all fight at the councils secretariat.

The DAILY TIMES gathered that the fight ensued following attempts by the leadership of the PDP in the state to impose a female councillor as the leader of the legislative arm.

Following the clash, many of the councillors sustained injuries and had to be taken to a nearby clinic for medical attention, while the staff and visitors took to their heels.

DAILY TIMES investigation in Umuahia showed that trouble started after the swearing-in of the newly-elected chairman, which also produced a group known as group (G.11) led by Sampson Ememe while the opposing group known as G.9 was led by Mrs. Charity Onye Omereneche.

According to sources at the council, Ememe enjoys the support of the council chairman Sam Ekeledo while Mrs Onye-Emereneche enjoyed the support of the state PDP secretary, Emeka Onuoha and the acting state chairman, S. M. Okezie.

When the legislative arm of the council was inaugurated, the Ememe faction won the election as the leader of the legislative arm, while the other faction walked out in protest.

Trouble started on Monday when G.11 was about to start the days proceedings and the G.9 stormed the council chambers with some people believed to be thugs and a free for al fight ensued.

The fight saw the councillors destroying the legislative mace, chairs and stationeries in the council chambers even window blades were broken, and doors smashed.

All efforts to speak with the people injured proved abortive as the security men stationed at the private hospital refused any discussion with them.
