Anambra Assembly Sacks Azodo, Achukwu
From Charles Onyekamuo in Awka

Echoes generated by the July 10, 2003 abduction of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Chris Ngige by a group of his former political associates reverberated in the state House of Assembly yesterday as the lawmakeers sacked the impeached former speaker Mrs Eucharia Azodo and a suspended member, Hon. Nelson Achukwu.

The house yesterday in a unanimous resolution which followed a motion brought before it by the Majority Leader, Hon. Humphrey Nsofor (Ekwusigo Constituency) declared vacant the seats occupied by the two legislators.

While Mrs Azodo, who was the speaker that received and caused the House to deliberate on the July 10, 2003, resignation letter purportedly written by Ngige represents Aguata I Constituency in the state assembly, Hon. Nelson Achukwu who represents Nnewi South II Constituency had dragged the governor to court December 29, 2003, claiming that the governor's supporters infringed on his fundamental human rights during the South East zonal mid-term congress of the PDP at Okpara Square, Enugu. He had also asked the Enugu High Court, where he took Ngige to order that the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Tafa Balogun should remove him from office having resigned on July 10, 2003.

Outside of this, the duo had been serving suspension imposed on them by the house since the July 10, 2003 abduction following what we perceived as their roles in the incident.

But the majority leader, Nsofor, who presented the motion said he had relied on Section 109 Paragraph F(3) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria which he said stipulated the number of days a legislator will have attended house sessions, failing which the speaker reserved the right to make observations. The section he intoned made attendance mandatory.
