House Reconvenes, Gets New Labour Bill From Ahamefula Ogbu in Abuja House of Representatives, which reconvened from a six-week recess yesterday formally, received the controversial Bill by President Olusegun Obasanjo seeking to decentralise the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). After the House reconvened at exactly 10.30 am yesterday, Speaker, Aminu Bello Masari read his opening speech where he urged members to concentrate more on bills that will impact more positively on the lives of electorate. He thereafter read the letter from Obasanjo explaining that there was need for options to be given to workers to decide which union to join which meant liberalisation of the labour unions in the country. He said the need to make labour union membership optional was one of the reasons government is seeking to amend the Trade Unions Act, which now outlaws resort to strikes to settle any dispute between government and labour. Masari warned that delay of bills by Committees would no longer be tolerated and that those involved in such delays would b sanctioned by the House leadership. "I wish to urge all of us to rededicate and reposition ourselves to the task of enacting legislations that will impact positively on the electorate. The problems of unemployment, inadequate health facilities, poor infrastructure, poverty and lack of education for our teeming population are there to be addressed and must be addressed," he said. He said one of the tasks this second year in office would be to strengthen the Committees to the effect that all members without office accommodation would be provided with same and invigorated to discharge oversight functions.
