FG Executes 161 Ecological Projects
From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja
The Federal Government said it has executed 161 out of 192 ecological projects since 1999 when this administration came to power. Of the 192 projects, twenty two are still on-going while nine of are stalled and two out of the nine have been terminated.
Minister of Inter-Governmental Affairs, Youth Development and Special Duties, Mr. Frank Nweke Jr. disclosed this while inaugurating an Administrative Committee to examine the stalled Auchi Gully Erosion Control Project.
Nweke told the newly inaugurated committee that the contract for the Auchi project was awarded to Paulosa Nigeria Limited at the sum of N87,793,006.40. According to him, since December when the contract agreement was signed, only 30 per cent of work has been executed.
The committee's terms of reference include: to look into the circumstances which led to the delay in completing the Auchi Gully Erosion Control Project, study the contract documents, measure the total value of work done including collapsed sections and determine the amount to be refunded by the contractor if any.
Others are to study the root cause(s) of the lapses in the entire project management by taking oral or written evidences from witnesses, identify persons or organisations whose actions or inactions led to the delay in completing the project and recommend measures that will both ensure the project is completed as quickly as possible, and to ensure that such delays do not occur in any other project in future.
The Ecological Fund office was set up by a decree (now an Act) to attend to national emergencies, such as flood, erosion, desertification, oil pollution, fire and general environmental pollution.
The committee has Engr. S. K. Haliru of the Ministry of Works as Chairman, Engr R. A. Oyewole of Water resources as the Alternate Chairman and Engr. Yerima Bulama of Ecological Fund Office as Secretary.
Other members are Engr. E. O Obuji Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Uche Isichei, Legal Adviser Office of the Secretary to Government of the Federation, and Mr. A. L. Dosunmu of Ecological Fund Office.
The committee has till August 6, to submit its report.
