...Blames Works Ministry for Nation's Bad Roads From Ahamefula Ogbu in Abuja House of Representatives Committee on works, which recently concluded a nationwide tour of road projects yesterday submitted its report accusing the Works Ministry of being responsible for the deplorable condition of federal roads. "The conditions of most of the roads nation-wide have assumed disastrous dimension, which require urgent and lasting solution," the report claimed. The report, which was submitted to the House yesterday by Chairman of the Committee, Hon Yahaya Yinusa, traced the bad state of the roads to inadequate supervision of contractors by officials of the Works Ministry. The report noted high incidence of abandoned of work by contractors owing to inability of government to honour contract agreement through prompt payment of contractors. The report also noted that most of the contractors claimed to have completed their jobs whereas the reverse was the case. "There was inadequate supervision by the Ministry of Works over contractors, judging from the manner in which some contracts were abandoned soon after mobilizing to sites. That such obvious inadequate supervision on the part of the Federal Ministry of Works largely accounts for manifest incompetence evidenced in the works executed by some contractors", the report said. The report further disclosed that the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) Labour Unit lacked requisite basic equipment to undertake the assignment of patching the roads, prompting in several instances, the taking over of federal roads by State governments to salvage the situation.
