Culture, Tourism Unifying Factors - Olusola

Culture and tourism have been described as very important instruments to strengthen relations among various within Nigeria and indeed the African continent.
Speaking at the formal inauguration of a twelve-man member advisory board of the Abuja International Travel Market (AITM) yesterday, a veteran broadcaster and culture promoter Ambassador Segun Olusola also said the tourism industry is one in which creation of wealth and millions of jobs can be actualized if properly planned.
He blamed the lacklustre performance of the sector on the multiplicity of interests, varied geographical spread and lack of standardization, which permeated every department of the industry, expressing hope that the recently established presidential council on tourism would facilitate speedy development of the sector.
"Whatever impact this development may have on the overall tourism business in the region, it is clear and obvious that tourism must begin to appreciated not only as a leisure activity but also as a potent factor in shaping the social, economic and political trends within the polity", he said.
Olusola said Nigeria has the potential to launch herself into a tourism giant in Africa.
Also speaking a former Minister of the then National Planning under the Babangida military administration, Ambassador Adenike Ebun Oyegbooa, noted that the whole world is moving towards making tourism a major economy-driver.
She advised Nigerian tourism promoters not to ignore examples of the glaring successes from the Latin American countries and to explore ways of cooperation in the cultural spheres.
The Abuja International Travel Market is new body striving to exploit the great tourism and cultural potentials in the country and to devised means marketing them to the outside world.
Some of its key objectives are to market and project Abuja - the Federal Capital Territory a major meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibition destination in Africa and to project positively the image of Nigeria to the outside world.
Its major activity later in the year would be the holding of an exhibition and conferences in Abuja for Airlines, GSA operators, Travel Agencies, Tour Operators, consultants, car hire companies and Airport officials.
