Ekiti Assembly Passes Bill on LGs From Dipo Okunmuyide in Ado-Ekiti Ekiti State House of Assembly has passed a new bill called Local Government Administration Amendment Law which according to the Speaker, Honourable Friday Aderemi is meant to curb corruption and ensure efficiency at the local government level. The bill which was passed at the sitting of the House on Monday empowers the state governor, Mr Ayo Fayose to unilaterally suspend any council chairman from office for a maximum period of three months over misconduct. According to the Speaker, the provision of the bill would not allow the executive to exercise the above power arbitrarily as he has to seek the consent of the legislature, adding that the bill equally replaced the removal power being sought by the governor to that of suspension. He explained further that the bill had not in any way snatched the power of the council's legislature arms to remove or suspend their erring chairmen though with the final approval of the governor.
