'No Going Back On Igbo Presidency'
From Christopher Isiguzo in Owerri
Imo State House of Assembly Speaker, Mr. Kelechi Nwagwu has reaffirmed that the south-easth is irrevocably committed to ensuring that the zone produced the next president, come 2007, noting that Igbos have made abundant sacrifices for the unity and progress of Nigeria to justify their demand for the coveted seat.
Nwagwu told newsmen in Owerri, yesterday that the issue of the Igbo producing President Olusegun Obasanjo successor in 2007 should not generate any controversy, stressing that it is absolutely selfish and unreasonable for anybody to contest Igbo's legitimate claim to the presidency after Obasanjo's tenure.
The Speaker, who is also the Co-ordinator of the South-east caucus challenged those insinuating that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) zoned the 2007 presidency to the North, to substantiate their claim, arguing that the zoning of party offices was not done on the pages of newspapers.
He said the PDP is an organised party and so could not have thrown equity, justice and fairness overboard in preference to injustice and chaos, which the northerners contention may likely brew.
He described the Igbo as being an intelligent, peace loving and well focused race who believe in dialogue as veritable and most mature means of conflict resolution and urged the North to emulate the wisdom of former Special Duties Minister, Alhaji Wada Nas and wait for their turn in 2015.
The Speaker also used the opportunity to shed more light on the latest position of the House to tighten the procedure for removing either the Speaker or his Deputy from office.
He said the amended procedure which requires three months investigation of any allegation raised, by a panel constituted by the Speaker was intended to bring sanity and stability in the state legislature as well as check mate raising of frivolous allegations against either the Speaker or his Deputy which only create unnecessary distractions at the end.
