Economic Woes Blamed on Poor Planning Plateau From Funmi Peter-Omale in Jos Former Adviser to the President on Food Security, Professor Ango Abdullahi, has alluded the economic woes facing the country to cumulative effects of acts of commission and omission of economic development policies and strategies. Specifically, Abdullahi said the agriculture sub-sector has suffered tremendously since the advent of petroleum, as a source of foreign exchange earnings. He said this while delivering a lecture on "Food Sufficiency, Security and National Development in Nigeria," at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru. He said exportation of cocoa, groundnuts, cotton and palm products suffered a setback with institutional support for food production taking a backstage. Abdullahi lamented that the staggering import bills in recent times were clear indication of Nigeria's inability to cope with growing national need for agricultural raw materials. "We can safely conclude that the Nigerian economy has so far failed to yield the kind of economic growth for the majority of Nigerians to prosper and be happy. Rather than grow in prosperity, the living conditions of the bulk of nigerians have gotten worse over the past 20 years." He warned that Nigeria would not be able to achieve economic affluence, except the agriculture sub-sector is developed, because most employment in Nigeria is agriculture-linked.
