JAMB Writes NANS on Admission Verification
Niger
From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja
Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has written the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on the of verification of admission letters of prospective corps members by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), urging the students to go on fact finding mission before issuing ultimatum to it.
In a letter signed by Tajudeen Hassan on behalf of the Registrar/Chief Executive, JAMB said though NANS' mandate to advocate for students academic rights and welfare cannot be faulted, it would be out of place for it to condemn genuine effort which seeks to ascertain proper admission procedure into tertiary Institutions.
"It would be expected that rather than condemn JAMB, NANS should have commended the Board for assisting the NYSC in sanitizing the system. It is also expected that NANS ought to have written a letter of commendation to NYSC for its bold, patrotic and commendable efforts in cleansing the system which was hitherto bedeviled by irregularities and malpractices.
It said that Act 33 of 1999 states among others that the Board remains the only pathway in which admission are sought into all tertiary institutions in Nigeria and this does not preclude those who gain admission either through Remedial or Pre-Degree Programmes.
"It would interest NANS to know that JAMB issues admission letters to candidates who are offered admission into any tertiary institution at the point of entry without aditional cost to the successful candidates. However, some candidates who are cleared by the authorities of their institutions without producing the admission letter of the JAMB at the point of registration would not bother until the need arise such as the case of the NYSC.
"In re-issuing such admission letters the Board takes into consideration moderate administrative charges that it would use to cover in part, some of the materials that were procured in the open market.
"As a social service organisation, JAMB has a responsibility to ensure that access to tertiary education is not priced out of the reach of the common man in Nigeria. It is based on this premise that the Board has maintained the cost of its application documents over the years", it said.
