Impeachment: Again, Kalu Pleads for Embattled Deputy
  • Tackles Wabara over allegation of violence
    By Olawale Olaleye

Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu has urged members of the State House of Assembly to reconsider their plan to impeach the Deputy Governor, Dr. Chima Nwafor.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Cecretary Mr. Samuel Onuoha Udeala, Kalu said, while he still believes in the principle of separation of powers among various arms of government, he would continue to appeal to members of the State House of Assembly to drop the move for the overall interest of the state.

The governor also dismissed allegation by the Senate President, Adolphus Wabara that there were plans to attack party officials who were billed to come on a fact-finding mission to the state as a figment of his imagination.

Kalu, who was reacting to newspaper report credited to Wabara that "Security reports indicated plans to attack PDP leaders coming to the State on a fact-finding mission, described the statement as an unfortunate.

He added that it is part of "his desperate but futile attempt to institutionalize illegality in the affairs of the political leadership of Abia State".

He pointed out that "indeed, it was Senator Wabara who was planning something sinister, having set a precedence of violent and unlawful expression of grievances when he mobilized thousands of thugs to albeit unsuccessfully, attempt to disrupt the swearing-in of duly and democratically elected Local Government Chairmen in Abia State on the 28th of June, 2004".

Kalu said he was stunned the level the Senate President was willing to descend in his quest to foist strange individuals on the people of Abia State as their "selected" leaders at all levels and reassured that the State Government, having nothing to hide, was willing to receive any team coming to the state on any mission.

He also dismissed Senator Wabara's claim that Abians were looking up to him for their redemption as baseless reminding the Senate President that since he (Wabara) had stated in one of his interviews that he was an investor who sold his house to win elections into the Senate and as such, would do everything possible to recoup his "investments", the people of Abia know better their leaders, who are truly selfless.

He urged Wabara to reflect on the significance of his office and begin "to appreciate the responsibilities placed on him rather than dabble in petty and undignified squabbles unbecoming of someone of his political status".

He assured Wabara that whenever he was willing to genuinely compliment the Abia state government in its developmental efforts, the people of Abia would extend a hand of fellowship.
