Rule With Fear of God, Clergy Urges Politicians By Sheriff Balogun Archbishop of Lagos, Methodist Church of Nigeria, His Grace, Most Revd (Dr) Sunday Ola Makinde has said before the citizenry could start to reap from the nation's socio-political fortunes, the ruling class should steer the affairs of the society with the fear of God. Speaking with newsmen, at a dedication service in Lagos, the clergy noted that in addition to such constructive and gainful move, parents and the church should as a matter of urgency strive to refocus the expectations of the youths in order for them to be actively involved in functional evangelism. Makinde, while expressing worry at the manner with which people go after wealth at the expense of their divine salvation, urged members of the political class "to rule with fear of God at all times and strive to improve the lots of the suffering numerous eletorates, who voted them into power, thus making the electorate appreciate positively, and gainfuly, the true dividends of democracy". He suggested that in stemming the tide of national crisis, leaders should employ and display effectively, the political will when confronted with issues affecting the nation. He urged President Olusegun Obasanjo to keep an eye on such states as Kano, Kaduna, Delta and other trouble spots with a view to nipping in the bud cases arising from ethno-religious crisis from such states. He, however, expressed regret ove the events that led to the proclamation of a state of emergency on Plateau State, just as he prayed for a speedy return of peace to the state.
