6 killed as trailers plunge into lagoon
WILLY EYA
SEVEN persons, two
of them motor conductors, were killed yesterday at the Apapa port complex,
Lagos, in two separate accidents.
At least six persons were killed when two
trailers plunged in berth 11 of the complex while in the other incident, an
unidentified conductor was crushed to death by a speeding lorry.
Those who died in the lagoon incident were
on board the trailers and a canoe allegedly used for oil bunkering within the
said operational area.
Two survivors swam to safety in the
accident.
According to eye witnesses, the incident
happened at about 6.30 a.m. when a conductor acting on the instruction of his
boss, the driver, wanted to park one of the trailers.
Relating the incident in tears, the
witnesses said the "motor boy", probably out of inexperience, sped off and lost
control of the vehicle, ramming it into a stationary trailer close to the
lagoon, within the same operational area.
Both vehicles, with their occupants,
subsequently plunged headlong and crashed into a canoe crew, all of them sinking
to the great depths of the lagoon.
When Daily Champion visited the
scene, fire officers, divers and other officers of the Nigerian Ports Authority
(NPA) were still making frantic efforts to rescue any survivors to no avail as
at press time.
Their efforts were compounded by the fact
that the accident happened between a ship and the berth, hence leaving little
space for operation.
Apapa Port Manager, Mr. Lekan Ajala,
confirmed the incidents to newsmen, describing it as unfortunate.
He stressed the need to be careful within
the operational areas and regretted that working there is risky.
Mr. Ajala said cranes had been ordered
from the nearby Nigeria Flour Mills and the container terminal to help in the
rescue operation.
However, as at press time, the trailers
and corpses were still inside the lagoon.
The port’s operational areas are usually
very slippery because of diesel from ships at berth and trailers evacuating
goods from them.
In the other accident, another conductor
within the complex died when a lorry ran over him.
The conductor, according to eye witnesses,
had moved to wedge his lorry, which lost its brake, with a huge wooden stopper,
but got crushed in the process.
