27 firms bid to produce GSM recharge cards

TWENTY-SEVEN companies that have indicated their interests in the local production of telephone recharge cards have been short-listed for scrutiny by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Vice-chairman of the commission, Mr. Ernest Ndukwe, disclosed this in Lagos on Wednesday while addressing participants at the Telecoms consumers' parliament.

Ndukwe, who expressed his delight at the development, said the names of the firms would be made known after they have been scrutinised but stressed that only the qualified ones would be selected.

The commission's vice-chairman also informed the forum that telephone lines in the country had increased from about 400 to over six million, out of which about five million belong to mobile-phone subscribers.

The Federal Government had in April said it would put an end to the importation of recharge cards, giving a deadline of January 2005 for all telephone companies in the country to comply. It had insisted that the importation of the cards was causing capital flight and worsening the problems of the economy.

"Operators are responding positively to the directive on local production of recharge cards. About 27 companies have indicated their interest to produce the cards locally.

"The names of the companies will be made known soon after scrutinising them to ensure that only qualified ones are selected", he told the forum.

Ndukwe also commented on the current rumour on a so-called "killer call", describing the matter as rubbish.

"I am ashamed to talk about it because there is no truth in it. The killer-call rumour is not anything that should engage the attention of anybody", he said.
