Delta to pursue power project, says govt

THE Government of Delta State has reiterated its commitment to the actualisation of an independent power project (IPP) to boost electricity supply to the people and socio-economic development.

The government's stance was emphasised yesterday in a statement by Mr. Abel Oshevire, Senior Special Assistant to Governor James Onanefe Ibori.

According to Oshevire, the project has not been shelved.

He explained that what Chief Ibori told reporters recently during his monthly Press Interactive Session was that "the state government was not going to own and operate the IPP project on its own but was into partnership with technical experts who would manage and run it."

Oshevire added: "The State Government chose to embark on the project in partnership with private sector investors, in view of the statutory requirement of distributing all power generated from IPP through NEPA's transmission grid which makes it imperative for the project to be private-sector driven.

"In this regard, the State Government has reached an advanced stage in its negotiations with local and foreign private sector investors to advance the course of the project.

"We wish to emphasise that the Delta State IPP project initiative which is to boost the quantum and quality of electricity power supply in order to propel its extension to all communities in the state is intended for completion and commissioning before the end of this administration on May 29, 2007."
