Court adjourns hearing in Tidjani's bail application
From Charles Coffie-Gyamfi, Abeokuta

AN Abeokuta High Court yesterday adjourned hearing in a bail application filed by the suspected trans-border robbery kingpin, Alhaji Ahmed Tidjani, to August 19.

Tidjani, who was not brought to the court yesterday is standing trial over a series of car robberies in Nigeria during which many people were killed.

He had been in detention since his arrest in September last year. All efforts by his counsel, Dr. Tunji Abayomi (SAN) to get his client a bail at the Abeokuta Chief Magistrate's Court where he first appeared, proved abortive.

The Chief Magistrate, Alhaji Lateef Adebare had insisted that he had no power to grant bail to the accused.

Abayomi was, therefore, in court yesterday to appeal to the High Court to grant his request.

But at the High Court, Abayomi was served with a counter-affidavit by the police appealing to the court not to grant the bail.

The affidavit, giving reasons for the police stance, indicated that the accused upon interrogation had admitted that a large number of stolen vehicles found in his premises were stolen by him.

It also indicated that investigations into the matter were still on. Justice Oluremi Jacob, who is the state's chief judge, disclosed that he would start his yearly vacation next week and had, therefore, transferred the case to the "Vacation Judge".
