3 varsity cultists jailed 14 years for murder

By Sina Babasola
Friday, July 30, 2004

IBADAN — THREE students of the University of Ibadan were yesterday sentenced to a 14-year imprisonment each for the murder in November 2002 of a fellow student, by an Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan. Jailed were Clement Onoja (22 years old), a 500 level Agricultural Economics undergraduate; Ahmed Folami (24), 200 level Statistics, and Aigbogun Osagie (22), 500 level Agriculture.

Their victim, Godfrey Adoroh, a 500 level Law student, was murdered on November 18, 2002 at Agbowo area, close to the university campus for allegedly raping one Ikpemosa Aigbogun (20). Aigbogun herself a 300 level Veterinary student and Nathaniel Akpheoikhai (33), a post graduate student were discharged and acquitted by the court. All five were arraigned early in the year for beating Adoroh leading to his death. The prosecution had informed the court that Adoroh was hospitalised on account of the beating only to die later at Group Medical Hospital, Ibadan.

Mr. Bayo Adegbite, from Oyo State Ministry of Justice, called four witnesses in the course of the trial to establish that Clement and the two others committed the offence. The accused students pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge preferred against them, insisting that they were not part of the mob that beat Godfrey Adoroh.

The accused students claimed that Godfrey was a notorious cultist and that it was the mob that attacked him and not them. Dean, Students Affairs of the university, Prof. Ajibade Ogunkunle told the court that Godfrey was expelled from the school for possession of ammunition and murder.

The trial judge ordered that the convicts should spend seven years imprisonment for each of the two-count charge  against them and that the sentences should run concurrently.

Discharging and acquitting Miss Aigbogun, who was raped, Justice Ige described her as a victim of circumstance who was used by the other accused to settle  scores.

Justice Ige discharged and acquitted the fifth accused person, Akpheokhai for want of evidence linking him to the scene of the incident.
