Multi-million naira property lost as fire razes Tejuosho Market in Lagos

LAGOS—Properties worth millions of naira were yesterday lost to an early morning inferno which gutted parts of the popular Tejuosho market in Yaba Local Government Area of Lagos state leaving traders bemoaning their extensive losses.

The fire which reportedly started around 3am at the fabrics section popularly called ‘Okirika’ spread wildly to other areas of the market destroying both goods and physical cash yet to be estimated. However, Governor Bola Tinubu who visited the burnt market sympathized with the victims and promised to ensure speedy reconstruction of the market with proper equipment and all necessary facilities in line with town planning laws.

Eyewitness account said the fire which its cause was unknown spread fast to other parts of the market and all efforts made by officials of Lagos State fire service and some officials of Julius Berger fire service who arrived their on time to get to the point of the inferno were made impossible as they could not gain easy access into the area. Some hoodlums and miscreants popularly known as 'Area Boys' capitalized on the confusion to loot goods and other properties. A detachment of anti-riot policemen who arrived at the market cordoned off the whole area thereby warding off the hoodlums.
