Iraq: 2 Pakistani hostages
beheaded
CHINWE MADUAGWU, with agency
report
TWO
Pakistanis taken hostage last Friday in Iraq have been beheaded even as a
Somalian truck driver was abducted by members of the Tawhid and Jihad militant
group.
This is the first time citizens from a
Muslim country are being executed.
A videotape from a group calling itself
the "Islamic Army in Iraq" showed the bodies of the Pakistanis, Azad Hussein
Khan and Sajid Naeem.
The two were kidnapped by the militants
who had threatened to kill them unless their Kuwaiti employers leave Iraq.
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has
condemned the killings, saying the perpetrators had "caused harm to humanity and
Islam."
Pakistan’s Charge d’Affaire in Baghdad,
Muhammed Iftikhar Anjum, also condemned the killings and requested that the
bodies of the men be handed over to them.
His words: "I now request that the bodies
may not be desecrated and handed over to us for burial as per Isalmic
traditions."
Also, inside Pakistan, families of the two
men are said to be shocked even as they have accused the Pakistani government of
not doing enough to secure their release.
Mr. Khan’s sister-in-law was quoted as
saying the deaths were "an overwhelming tragedy for us," while his
brother-in-law, Abdul Razaq said Pakistan should have ruled out sending troops
to Iraq.
"If the government of Pakistan had tried,
this tragedy could’ve been averted. The government should have categorically
said it would not send troops to Iraq," he said.
Reports said though various groups in Iraq
have killed several foreign hostages, this is the first incident in which
citizens from a Muslim country have been executed.
Reports said video tape of the Somalian
held by his captors was aired by Arabic TV Station Al-Jazzera and showed three
masked and armed militants standing behind a seated man waving a passport. They
said Al-Jazeeria identified the hostage as Ali Ahmed Mousaa whom the militants
have threatened to kill within 48 hours if the Kuwaiti company he works for does
not leave Iraq.
