How security breach was foiled EBHOHON IKHURIONAN,abuja
FACTS have emerged on how the national security breach uncovered last March. The DAILY TIMES gathered that an army lieutenant from the North had informed Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the plan to blow off President Olusegun Obasanjo�s heli-copter in Ota, Ogun State. In a swift response, Atiku directed the army officer to the Chief of Staff. It was also learnt that the State Security Service (SSS) was the one who informed the army authorities of the alleged plot for which Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Offier to the late Gen. Sani Abacha, was among those arrested. The plotters, it was gathered, had also planned to restructure the country, if they ahd succeeded. The DAILY TIMES reliably gathered that as a first step, of the restructuring the alleged plotters had planned to relocate the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to Port Harcourt. Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development, Kaduna and Mines and Steel goes to Lokoja, the Kogi State capital. Details of the document retrieved from one of the suspects now at large, Commander Yakubu Kudambo, spelt out the restructuring of Nigeria. The DAILY TIMES also gathered that the Special Investigations Panel (SIP) indicted operatives of the State Security Services (SSS) for the escape of Kudambo, described as the link between Al-Mustapha and other plotters. Kudambo was being inter-viewed by SSS when he escaped through the alleged connivance of the security operatives, said to be sympathetic to Al-Mustapha. In addition, President Olusegun Obasanjo was quoted as having berated SSS leadership for the escape of Kudambo and asked them to produce the suspect at all cost, an action which informed the sponsored advertorial in the dailies declaring Kudambo wanted. Already, four military officers and two civilians have been recommended for trial by the SIP. But the escape of Kudambo is said to be causing sleepless night to security operatives as he is a vital person in the plot. |
