Information council approves establishment of Child Rights Bureau

AIDELOJE OJO, Minna

THE National Council onInformation has approved the establishment of Child Rights Information Bureau by federal and state ministries of information to promote child rights and women issues.

The council, in a statement issued at the end of its 34th meeting in Minna, called for intensification of campaign against wild polio virus at all levels of government and directed state media organisations to promote women and children issues by granting free air time and space in their media.

The council, chaired by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Chief Chukwuemeka Chikelu, also noted with concern the high rate of HIV/AIDS in the country and called for a concerted action towards an effective sensitisation of Nigerians about the scourge, with adequate budgetary provisions.

It also approved the urgent need by all states to revive the film units as an integral part of the development efforts of their respective states.

The minister, who read the statement at the end of the meeting to the media, explained that the council received and deliberated on 26 memoranda, adding that the council unanimously agreed to give full support to the Nigeria image project.

Fielding questions from newsmen on the project, Chikelu explained that it was not aimed at image laundering but to present the country to the outside world in its right perspective.

He said part of the project was the orientation of Nigerians towards the need to portray their best characters at all times.

The minister said the county had produced eminent personalities whose impact were felt world-wide in all aspects of human endeavour including humanitarian services.

He said it was wrong for some countries to see only the bad aspect of Nigeria, adding that the image project was aimed at dropping these misconceptions about the country.

According to him, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and President Olusegun Obasanjo, have given their support for the project.

He also called on the media to support the project by reporting positive events in the country and defending the national interest at all times.
