Faulty power plant grounds PPMCs operations
Sola Adebayo, Warri
The power plant in the ailing Warri Refining and Petrochemical company, has broken down.
The Punch exclusively reported lat Monday that the power plant was at the verge of collapse.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday ,led to the disruption of operations at the Warri Area Office of the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company, which relies on power generation from WRPCS plant for its activities.
Consequently, normal loading of petroleum products could not take place at Warri depot of PPMC since Wednesday morning due to power failure resulting from the broken down power plant.
Major and independent oil dealers, who besieged the depot on Wednesday for their routine activities were disappointed when the information about the fate of the plant filtered around the area.
Our correspondent gathered that some of the dealers reluctantly showed up at the depot on Thursday in anticipation of early restoration of power supply to enable them resume business activities.
Our correspondent, who visited the depot in the early hours of Thursday, learnt that the WRPCs engineers were making frantic efforts to bring the plant back to life.
Our correspondent could not, however, ascertain if the engineers eventually succeeded in the task before press time.
But a cross section of dealers, who spoke to our correspondent urged the Federal Government to urgently carry out major overhauling of the power plant to ensure uninterrupted operation.
The Punch had reported last Monday that the power plant was due for maintenance.
Our correspondent gathered that two boilers in the power station, identified as GTI and GT2 currently operate at 25 per cent of its installed capacity while the GT3 had broken down since 2002.
The Managing Director of WRPC, Mr. Basil Idahosa, recently informed a Joint Committee of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior staff Association of Nigeria and National Union of Petroleum and National Gas Workers, on inspection tour of the nations refineries that the power plant was not functioning properly to guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Idahosa said the plant was due for major overhauling, adding that delay in budget approval by the Federal Government stalled the exercise over the years.
