theft

Love of money may have landed a commercial bus driver in
avoidable trouble in Port Harcourt as he has been arrested
for alleged involvement in the theft of NEPA cables.
The 26-year-old driver, Sunny Eze and an accomplice, Paul
Ayogu, were arrested by the police for allegedly vandalizing
and stealing the cables at Elele Alimini in Rivers State.
The cables were being used for the construction of some towers
in an on-going project to link some communities to the national
grid. Police sources put the value of the 1.32KV cables at
about N10.5million
Speaking when the two suspects were paraded recently, Eze
said his bus was hired for N15,000 (fifteen thousand naira)
by Ayogu, a secondary school leaver, to convey the cables
from Elele to a cable market on Okija Street, Port Harcourt.
He said until the now-regrettable deal, he had never met Ayogu,
a statement that the latter confirmed.
“I am a commercial driver. I ply Elele- Owerri line
and that day, this man (Ayogu) came to me and hired me to
carry the cables to Port Harcourt. I did not know that they
were stolen”
Asked by Daily Sun whether he did not consider N15,000 too
much for a trip of less than two hours, the suspect said he
merely exploited the fuel scarcity at the time, to make good
money.
On his own, Ayogu confessed that a friend, an indigene of
Elele, introduced him to the illegal act.
“It was a friend of mine, Peter Mbanaso who is from
Elele, that connected me to cutting of the cables. We cut
it in the morning and I had to hire this man (Eze) to help
us carry it to Port Harcourt.
Ayogu said he was paid N8,000 (eight thousand naira) for the
job and that he was told to convey the cables to “one
Ethel from Imo State” at No. 9 Okija Street who occupies
Shed 5 at the market.
The suspect said that it was his friend, Mbanaso, now on the
run, that paid him and Eze for the job, an allegation which
was vehemently denied by Eze who said he had never met Mbanaso.
“I don’t know Mbanaso. It was him (Ayogu) who
chartered me and paid me. I never met Mbanaso”.
Despite the disagreement between the two suspects, Ayogu confirmed
Eze’s claim that they had never met before the day of
the crime. Speaking on their arrests, Police image maker,
Mrs Ireju Barasua (ASP) urged for public vigilance and co-operation
in the hunt for criminals in the state.
Barasua hinted that the suspects would be prosecuted on conclusion
of investigation.
