NAFDAC blows hot in Kano
By Ibrahim Barde, Kano
Friday July 30, 2004

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reiterated its resolve to stamp out all fake and illegally manufactured drugs and warned that offenders run the risk of being prosecuted under the relevant laws of the country, Director-General of the agency, Dr. Dora Akunyili told Daily Sun in Kano recently.

According to the Director-General, all marketers of drugs are advised to register immediately in order to meet the December, 2004 deadline. "Already, regulatory officers of NAFDAC have started a nationwide surveillance of pharmacies, patent medicine stores, open markets and other sales outlets, preparatory to the enforcement exercise," Akunyili said.

Dr. Akunyili said the agency under her leadership will not extend the dealine for drug registration and dismissed the insinuations that the registration process was aimed at making money for the agency. She pointed out that “from now on, any bus or vehicle, conveying drug hawkers will be impounded by NAFDAC and the driver of the vehicle and the hawker would be prosecuted under the relevant narcotic laws of Nigeria," adding: "it is regrettable that Nigeria remains the only country in Africa where drugs are still hawked in buses, motor parks and in the streets."

She said the recent NAFDAC consultative meeting in Kano with stakeholders was organized to tackle myriad of problems facing the local manufacturers in the country. Akunyili averred that NAFDAC was prepared to help indigenous manufacturers grow to enviable levels of their foreign counter-parts but insisted the rules must be followed.

Meanwhile, Alhaji (Dr.) Ado Bayero has commended the activities of the agency, particularly the stringent steps taken against fake drugs. The Emir made the commendation when the Director-General paid him a courtesy visit to seek his royal blessing and support.
