Female lawyers' leader wants more for women
By Samson Adeoye
WOMEN worldwide deserve more than they get from their governments, the President of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Puan Sri Datin Serin Saraswathy Devi, has said.
She, therefore, urged leaders to give adequate attention to women-related matters.
At the opening ceremony of the association's African Regional Conference in Lagos yesterday, Devi observed that in spite of the awareness already created on the rights of women, "a lot of ignorance or outright non-recognition of these rights still exists".
The failure of numerous policies and laws targeted at protecting women, according to her was due to insufficient collaborative efforts to execute them.
"We observe that even where the appropriate legislation and policies exist, there has been non-concerted effort to ensure the implementation of these legislation and policies, she said".
The five-day African congress, which started on Monday, has as its theme: "Women's Rights: from Awareness to Implementation".
Devi asked leaders to address girl-child education, the status of women in international policies, challenges in the work-place, the Human Immuno-deficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS), Impediments to women's economic empowerment and the impact of culture on women's rights.
She said that the papers to be presented at the conference would give participants "an insight" into alternative ways of ensuring implementation of programmes favourable to women in their individual countries".
The organisation's Vice President for Africa, Mrs. Veronica Odunuga said that the objective of the congress is to emphasise the importance of women's roles towards success in nations building.
Odunuga stressed that the theme "has been chosen because we believe that showing concern for and recognising the rights of every woman is a fundamental step in achieving progress this millennium".
