Rivers, NEPA sign power purchase pact
From Alifa Daniel, Abuja

F RESH grounds were been broken by the Rivers State government on the energy sector on Wednesday in Abuja.

The state government signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) for the smooth running of the state's Trans Amadi Power Plant.

Minister of Power and Steel Mr. Liyel Imoke, Governor Peter Odili, and NEPA's Managing Director, Mr. Joseph Makoju did not disclose how much NEPA would buy power from the plant before redistributing to consumers.

Makoju only disclosed that the revenue from the venture would be shared on a ratio of 70:30 between the state government and NEPA.

Imoke commended the Rivers State government for the initiative and emphasised it was the first independent power project agreement in the country. He pledged that by the time the state completes its second power plant, NEPA would be able to meet the energy demand of residents and commercial organisation in the state.

The N42 billion Trans Amadi Power Plant, commissioned a year ago by President Olusegun Obasanjo now generates about 30 mega watts of electricity.

Odili said that the plant was among power stations planned to meet the power needs of the people and stimulate economic growth.

He added that another power outfit would be commissioned in September this year.

The governor hinted that the state's transmission facility might be ready for commissioning during the period.

Makoju also lauded the state government of the project and asked other states to toe the line.

He put NEPA's power stock at 4,000 mega watts while demand stood at 6,000 mega watts.
