Strike continues in Imo, offices remain shut
From Charles Ogugbuaja, Owerri

P UBLIC and private offices, including banks, remained closed yesterday in Owerri, the Imo State capital, as the nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the recent fuel price increment entered its second day.

Throughout the day, the Orlu and Okigwe roads' State Secretariats were locked. Workers who came to investigate the situation merely loitered around and went back to their homes.

Financial institutions, including First Bank, Hallmark Bank, Oceanic and Citizens banks all locked their gates.

Policemen were seen patrolling the city to ensure violence-free strike and secure public property.

Commercial activities went on in some parts of the city. Transporters, including commercial motorcyclists, plied intra and inter-city routes. Taxis charged N30 per drop, while motorcyclists charged between N30 and N100 per drop, depending on the distance. Markets and shops opened for business.

Government and private hospitals rendered services. The situation was calm at the Federal Medical Centre on Orlu Road, Owerri where doctors and other health workers were seen attending to patients.

Official number plates on government vehicles were changed to private numbers and inscriptions on them tampered with.

Filling stations continued to sell petrol at between N59 and N60 per litre.

At the Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri junction, along Okigwe-Orji road, some students made bonfire to protest alleged plans by the authorities to bar female students from appearing on campus scantily dressed.

However, another report indicated that the demonstration was in support of the strike called by the NLC.
