Borno warns against diversion of fertiliser
From Njadvara Musa, Maiduguri
G OVERNOR Ali Modu Sheriff of Borno State has warned against the diversion of fertiliser meant for farmers in the state.
Sheriff gave the warning while launching this year's fertiliser distribution scheme at the emir's palace in Uba.
According to him, the warning of the fertiliser merchants became inevitable because it has deprived a lot of farmers of the synthetic manure for many years, leading to low food production.
He restated his administration's commitment to boosting the agricultural sector by, among others, ensuring the procurement and distribution of fertiliser to genuine farmers.
Already, he said a total of 7,270 metric tonnes of fertiliser have been procured for this year's planting season, adding that for 2004/2005 planting season, a total of 145,400 bags of fertiliser were made available to the farmers.
The governor directed the traditional rulers to identify all the genuine farmers in their respective domains, noting that this would ensure that each farmer gets the fertiliser at the appropriate time with 33 per cent subsidy.
Besides, he charged the traditional rulers in the seven emirates in the state to monitor the distribution and application of fertiliser by the farmers.
On the cost of the product, Sheriff told The Guardian that they were procured at the total cost of N225 million.
He disclosed that because of the large population of farmers in the state, coupled with the increasing demands for fertiliser this year, his government would reactivate the dormant Fertiliser Blending Plant (FBP) located on Dikwa Road.
He warned the farmers against selling the feriliser to make profits and marrying more wives, explaining that the government's policy of subsidising the product is to reduce the cost so that the local farmers could earn a living and develop the state's agricultural resources.
