INEC Begins Plan For 2007 Polls

Against the backdrop of accusations and counter accusation of partisanship against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the last general elections, the electoral body has resolved to go to the drawing board to fine tune its strategy for the 2007 polls.
National Electoral Commission (NEC) for Kwara, Niger and Plateau States, Mr Anuka Uchola on a courtesy visit to Governor Bukola Saraki of Kwara State yesterday assured that the review of the strategy would ensure the conduct of a free, fair and credible election in 2007.
Uchiola in a veiled reference to the criticism against the commission on the conduct on the conduct of last year's polls, stated that INEC has stated a post morten of the election, "to assess the situation and identify areas of improvement.
According to him, the electoral body after the conduct of the pools met to review the situation and resolved to a seminar on the conduct of general elections which shall be taken round INEC offices in all the states.
At our level, we resolved on the need to do a post morten of 2003 elections involving all the political parties, international communities and other stake-holders in the polity".
Part of the fine tuning according the electoral commissioner include, finetuning of the voters register. Identification of new technology "Geographical Information system" (GLS) to assist in identifying all polling station in the country.
He stated that the present computerized voters register would be updated by the end of the year.
The electoral commissioner who was in Ilorin for another of the post 2003 general elections seminar stressed the need for electoral reform simultaneously with economic reforms.
Uchola disclosed that such seminars might not have come at a better time than now when voices of anti-democratic forces seemed to be heating the polity and threatening the democratic culture.
