Shell Puts Out Oil Well Fire By Gloria Achoyamen ShellPetroleum Development Company (SPDC) said yesterday, that the fire at one its wells in Rivers state, has been put out after more than three weeks. The fire which occured mid last month on the company's Afam Well-16 located in Oyigbo Local Government Area of the state, was said to have been ignited in the course of a crude oil theft by some unknown persons. In a statement issued by SPDC Corporate External Relations Manager, Mr. Don Boham, said the fire was put out on June 5, 2004, "after it was ensured that the well was under control. "Afam Well-16 caught fire on Sunday, May 16 after suspected crude oil thieves, damaged the wellhead following which SPDC invited experts from Boots and Coots because of the complexity of the situation," the statement said.
