Landlords, Bayelsa Govt Trade Words Over Illegal Structures From John Iwori in Yenagoa Landlords in the Bayelsa state capital, Yenagoa and the state government are on loggerheads over the proposed demolition of buildings and structures tagged "illegal" by the authorities. The state government had in a letter through its Taskforce on Illegal Structures, asked some landlords in Yenagoa, especially Amarata to stop work on what it termed illegal structures and pull down same "within 72 hours." The demolition letter which was signed by the chairman of the taskforce, Major S. Inikio (rtd) said the affected buildings infringed on government's building regulations. However, in a swift reaction to the order, property owners under the auspices of Landlord's Association, Amarata, said "the various plots earmarked for government acquisition are clearly marked by sign post or other symbols which is not the case with our area. We cannot be so careless and unmindful to encroach into government acquired lands with our 35 years of sweat if there are signs indicating such." According to a letter addressed to Alamieyeseigha and titled: "stay of action on proposed demolition exercise," the landlords alleged that people who want to create confusion in order to achieve their parochial aims are at work to tarnish the "good name you have toil to achieved." The aggrieved landlords, enjoined the governor not to allow anybody to make an Ijaw man to become a refugee in his own land, even as they added: "it will be an abomination in the sight of God as well as our great ancestors to go ahead h the demolition exercise."
