Ebonyi to Exploit Rice Potentials for EBSEEDS From Chinedu Eze in Abakaliki Ebonyi State government will exploit its abundant rice production potential in realising the objectives in its Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (EBSE-EDS) in order to retain its age-long status as the major food basket of the nation. This was the recommendation by the 36-man committee set up by the state government to evolve a strategy for the development of Ebonyi State version of economic development empowerment strategy. A member of the committee who is also Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences in Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, Prof. Ugwuba Egwu, told journalists that the best venture that could make the state grow is mostly agriculture. He observed that out of the 53 varieties of rice available in West Africa, Ebonyi has the best variety, which is now massively cultivated in Ivo Local Government area of the state. Egwu stressed that with increased cultivation of Ivo rice both during the rainy and dry seasons, Nigeria would no longer import rice from either Thailand, China or the United States of America.
