Stop Overheating Polity, Obasanjo Told
From Efem Nkanga in Uyo

Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Chief Nelson Efiong, has cautioned President Olusegun Obasanjo to stop overheating the polity and revert to the former price regime of petroleum products for peace to reign in the country.

Speaking after the passage by the House of a resolution condemning the increase and cautioning against the NLC strike, on Tuesday, Chief Efiong stressed that the fuel crisis was bound to overheat the polity coming after the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Plateau State.

He lamented that Nigerians were made to pay more for petrol during the period of surplus revenue from excess crude oil sale instead of enjoying the windfall like people in the Middle East and other parts of the world who are equally endowed with petroleum.

The Speaker pointed out that the President had boxed himself into a tight corner and needed to act the patriot to get out from that unfortunate position.

His words, " According to one of the greatest writers of our time, Cheik Anta Diop, ' Never you put yourself in a position from which you cannot advance without grave risk and from which you cannot retreat without losing face.' It is my belief that Mr. President is today unfortunately in that position. It takes a great patriot to be able to resolve this impasse.

It is our view that this latest increase has brought one crisis too many to Nigeria and we ask that Mr President should be the patriot that we know he is by allowing the sleeping dog to lie and revert to the former price regime before the recent increase pending the outcome of the previous case in court."
