Workers Stay Away from Offices Imo From Christopher Isiguzo in Owerri Workers in Imo State yesterday stayed in their homes in compliance with the directive by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) that workers should embark on an industrial action to protest the recent increase in the prices of petroleum peoducts. Also, most banks, business centres and schools were shut when our correspondent went round the town to monitor the situation. At First Bank, Citizens Bank and Oceanic Bank, people who wanted to withdraw money were seen hanging around, even though they were told by securitymen to come back later in the day. In some other banks, skeletal services were being offered, as customers were ushered in through the back door. Policemen were also seen at strategic locations, apparently to check disorderliness or "unlawful processions". When THISDAY visited the Okigwe and Orlu road secretariats, most of the workers were seen milling around. The few junior workers seen, said they came to find out if the strike was still going on "because of conflicting reports that court has stopped the strike". When contacted, the state NLC chairman, Mr. Steve Ibe said they were yet to get directives from the National Secretariat to call - off the strike. "The National Executive Council (NLC) of NLC has to meet and decide whether or not to call of the strike; until that is done, we are not going to allow any Imo worker to go to work", he said.
