LGs Decry Activities of Federal Officials
Lagos West and East Local Government Areas have alerted the public on what they called the provocative and inciting activities of persons parading themselves as Personal Assistants to the Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe.
According to a statement issued by Mrs. Derin Disu and Alhaji Muftau Kadiku, chairmen of the councils, the alleged aides were alleged to be going around councils with a retinue of armed mobile policemen, inciting the people against the payment of local government rates and fees.
"To confirm the above, some officials of the Federal Ministry of Works, FMW, are also known to be actively and decidedly attempting to confiscate public car parks along the Marina as well as warespoints and markets. We are yet to know the reason for this", the council leaders stated.
They also alleged that the same set of officials have also compiled the list of all car parks and the management agents, which they have submitted to the Zone 2 police headquarters in Onikan, Lagos.
"It is important to state that the fourth schedule, S 1 (e) & (f) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, vests the management of Public Motor Parks and Markets, Public highways and open spaces on the Local Government. This constitutional position is again clearly supported in items 6 and serial no 19 on pages 9 to 10 of the Federal Government White Paper of 1988", they said.
They alleged that peasant traders, motor park attendants/managers and other citizens have continuously besieged the local government secretariats in protest against the Federal Government big stick, which has the obvious effect of negating the current efforts at reducing unemployment, crime and communal acrimony.
Meanwhile, an injunction dated May 27, 2004 has been obtained from the Lagos High Court restraining the police and their agents and all others harassing the local government, its staff, agents and others from performing its functions at the parks.
Disu and Kadiku noted that Lagos Island is a very volatile part of Lagos State and as chief security officers of our respective local governments, it behoves their offices to respond to this glaring case of intimidation of innocent people before it leads to a crisis situation, hence this press release.
