Obasanjo, others reaped from Abiola’s death -Ogun gov

    KOLA ADEPOJU, Abeokuta

GOVERNOR Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State, weekend, declared that all political office holders in the country, including President Olusegun Obasanjo are beneficiaries of Chief M.K.O. Abiola’s death. Chief Abiola died in detention in 1995.

The late Abiola was the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential elections. Governor Daniel, made the declaration even as the late Chief Abiola’s daughter, Hafsat, said President Obasanjo has not done enough for the nation.

Daniel and Hafsat spoke at the Special Fidau prayers, commemorating the anniversary of the annulment of the June 12 presidential poll.

Governor Daniel said "I am not aware of any political office holder today who can deny that he’s not reaping from the dividends of democracy that Chief Abiola died for.

"Of course, we cannot deny the fact that these benefits that are accruing to this generation is from the sacrifices of the Abiolas, especially the two of them that paid the supreme price - Chief M.K.O. Abiola and of course, Kudirat Abiola, the wife", he added.

Daniel assured that "the late Abiola is not dead, his spirit is still with us" promising that "we won’t let him die in vain".

Speaking earlier, Hafsat moved some of the dignitaries to tears when she narrated the affect of her father’s death on the entire family and the society at large.

Hafsat lamented the present level of poverty in the country saying President Obasanjo and some governors had failed to stem it.

She appealed to Obasanjo to introduce reforms that would affect the lives of the poor positively.

"Federal Government’s not doing enough to alleviate poverty in the land. We want our president to make things work for Nigerians."

"Government may be introducing reforms but we need reforms that are going to affect the lives of the masses of the country", she added.

Other members of the Abiola family present at the event were Jamiu, Mubashiru, Muritala, and Tajudeen.

Also, present were dignitaries including wife of the state governor, Olufunke, the Deputy Governor Alhaji Salmot Badru, the speaker, Chief Bode Mustapha, Chief Titi Ajanaku, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in South-West, Muyiwa Collins, Femi Bankole, Alhaji Niyi Adegbenro and the son of President Obasanjo, Gbenga.
