Fuel Strike: Tinubu Hails Judiciary, Oshiomhole
By Ndubuisi Francis
Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Lagos State yesterday reviewed the recent pronuncements by the courts especially on the just suspended nationwide strike against increase in fuel prices and gave the judiciary a pass mark even as he described Labour leader, Adams Oshiomhole as the people's voice.
Tinubu who fielded questions from airport correspondents at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos noted that the efforts of Oshiomhole, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) should be commended as he represented the voice of the people.
"We must commend the efforts of Adams Oshiomhole. He is the people's voice. That's all that democracy is all about and that democracy is the extent of it; freedom and justice and fairness in the pursuit of the happiness of the people", he said.
The governor also commended the judiciary for its recent pronouncements on national issues, observing however that sometimes it is expected that such pronoucements may not be favourable.
"We may not have heard the last of judicial pronouncements. People have their rights and sovereignty is not to surrender to anybdody. That sovereignty is the people's right...
"Well, I commend the judiciary. To be honest with you, the judiciary has been doing a good job. It's the last hope of the commonman. We cannot have it 100 per cent most of the time. As long as it's fair and justice is transparent, we would get to where we are going.
"We need those stages and quick efforts at ameliorating the sufferings of the people. When you look overseas, we are not comparable when we say this is the price in Ghana, UK(United Kingdom) and America. In London, you have the alternative, you choose your mode of transportation.
"I don't have to drive my car. There is organised public network transportation system. You can now reduce the consumption while you are fixing the refineries. To me it's getting to a stage where we have to sit down as stakeholders and make critical analysis of what the pubic is suffering," Tiunubu said.
On democracy, the governor said efforts were being made to immortalise the late Chief M.K.O Abiola; his equally deceased wife Kudirat, Pa Alfred Rewane and all those who symbolised democratic struggle.
He observed that the process that got Abiola elected in 1993, Option A4 was worthy of being copied while advocating electoral changes in the country.
