Police Monitoring Unit Set Up
Minister of Police Affairs, Chief Broderick Bozimo, has announced the setting up of a monitoring unit by his ministry to check police conduct throughout the country.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja at the weekend, the minister said the purpose of the unit, which has already been approved by President Obasanjo will be known as "Police Performance Surveillance Unit."
The unit, the minister said would be charged with the responsibility of "receiving and collating information, complaints and reports on overall Nigeria Police activities, especially on roadside extortion from members of the police nationwide."
Membership of the unit, according to Bozimo, will include representatives of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), anti corruption unit of the Police Affairs Ministry, Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria (ARPON), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Non Govern-mental Organisations (NGOs) doing police work, university teachers and other notable Nigerians.
The Committee, Bozimo added, "would assess police performance generally and motivate its personnel through appropriate rewards/reprimands where necessary and thus help to improve on the image and performance of the police."
The minister said arrangements are in top gear to dedicate telephone, fax lines and e-mail addresses in his ministry and the Police Service Commission (PSC) to enable Nigerians register their grievances and commendations for the police personnel.
While urging Nigerians to avail themselves of this opportunity to communicate their reactions about the police, the minister assured that all information would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
Bozimo said that he would institute awards for best performance by the zones, states and police commands, while officers and men with exceptional qualities, drive and dedication would not be left out of the reward exercise.
"It is our view that this system when fully operational would ginger each zone and command to put in their best and also encourage its officers and men to shun corrupting practices, while putting in their best in the overall interest of the nation," Bozimo said.
