Plateau: CAN Chairman Tasks Christians on Peace, Unity
From Funmi Peter-Omale in Jos
Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Plateau State, Rev. Yakubu Pam, has enjoined Christians in the state to join hands with government in the restoration of peace and unity.
Pam made this call during an interdenominational service at the Living Faith Auditorium in Jos yesterday. The programme, which was attended by the state administrator, Gen. Chris Alli (rtd), his wife, Dorathy, suspended Governor, Chief Joshua Dariye and other top government functionaries and clergy men.
According to the clergy man, "the Federal Government knew the people of the state were not happy with the state of emergency and that is why they brought someone the people of the state love so much because of his antecedents while he was the military administrator."
He however urged the administrator to be wary of politicians who, he said, could be a stumbling block if he should listen to all their advice.
Taking his text from Luke chapter 15 verses 12 to the end, Pam noted that the prodigal son in arrogance asked his father for his share of the father's wealth but that he eventually came back for forgiveness having squandered his inheritance.
"The problem with us in Plateau State is that everybody is arrogant and have no respect for constituted authorities and spiritual leaders. It is time for us to go back to our God and ask for deliverance and forgiveness," he said.
In his own speech, Alli commended the church for organising the service, which he said was a demonstration of the people's willingness to embrace peace as the only way forward.
He noted that the state had suffered both material and human losses, but urged Christians in the state to embrace other religions and other peoples.
He lamented that it will take government N12 billion to rebuild the burnt market, saying the resources would have been put into proper use in developing other areas of the state. "The crises have set this state back by about 10 years and it will take decades to rebuild all that have been lost to the crises," he stated.
Special prayers were held seeking for God's intervention, to heal the land and protect his people from further calamities and bloodshed.
