'Why We Didn't Join Strike'
From Tunde Sanni in Ilorin

Secretary of the College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) in the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, Mrs. Folake Ibrahim has explained her branch's refusal to join the just suspended nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress.

Ibrahim who spoke to THISDAY on the campus of the institution attributed the refusal to non-information from the national body of the union.

She said the union is not an affiliate of the NLC, adding that information on the strike has to be passed by the national body of the union to its branches.

"COEASU is a registered national body and we follow rules strictly. We waited for a circular from our national body on the strike and seeing none, we decided to go on with our lawful duties."

"It is not as if we did not want to share in the struggle of the NLC since it is the struggle for liberation and justice but we did not want to act unilaterally in contrast to the position of our national body."

Academic activities went on smoothly all through the three days the nationwide strike lasted in the institution.

Except on the second day of the strike when the local NASU joined, hustle and bustle on the campus belied the mood in the state and nation.

Chairman of the state NLC, Comrade Emman Aiyeoribe commended workers who joined the struggle and assured them of the support and solidarity of the congress at their hours of need.

He confirmed that COEASU was not an affiliate of NLC but expressed displeasure at the refusal of the Local COEASU to join the strike, "their refusal is noted". The NLC boss added, "you have monitored the strike, I can tell you that compliance is total. College of Education is the only isolated case even as they are a lone voice. Their refusal is noted."
