HIV/AIDS Policies: Female Lawyers Seek Legal Backing By Abimbola Akosile International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) rose from a week-long African Regional Congress in Lagos, calling on government and stakeholders to ensure legal backing is given to policies and strategies to curtail and prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, to ensure their effectiveness. Presenting the communiqu�, Regional Vice-President of FIDA Mrs V. Odunuga stressed the need for domestication and implementation of international instruments on the protection of the rights of women and children; and that government should remember its roles and responsibilities towards reco-gnising the citizenry as stakeholders in the democratic process. The group also resolved that the male and female child must be given equal opportunities to education without discrimination and so dismantle traditional inhibitions against the education of the girl child. Citing examples which include early marriage, child-bearing, household labour, care for younger siblings and participation in food production, they insisted these must be stopped. Contained in The communiqu�, which was signed by Mrs. Roli Craig, the group's National Publicity Secretary, further called for the appointment of more women to key positions in government to ensure greater female influence in decision-making. FIDA also insisted that all forms of discrimination and prejudices against women in their work-place must be removed to provide a level playing ground for both the male and female worker, who at all times must be judged by their intelligence and ability to perform their assigned roles.
