Stop Registering Churches As Enterprises, Okogie Tells FG
From Omon-Julius Onabu in Benin-City
Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, has asked the Federal Government to stop the registration of churches, saying government is unwittingly encouraging the nefarous activities of religious fraudsters by registering churches like free enterprises.
Okogie also decried what he termed high level of injustice in the country, whereby attempts were being made by certain people and groups to institutionalise sin and ungodliness and glorifying such vices as social norms.
He made these observations yesterday during a Mass at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Benin-City, to mark the "Solemnity of Corpus Christi." The occasion, which formed part of the activities marking his three-day official visit to Edo State, which was also used to commemorate the 58th anniversary of the baptism of Archbishop Patrick E. Ekpu of Benin.
According to the Cardinal, inasmuch as the Catholic Church recognised that it falls within the purview of government to check the unwholesome activities of fraudsters, who often masquerade as Christian religious leaders, it does not fall within its jurisdictional competence to undertake the registration of churches.
Okogie, therefore, advised government to immediately leave the issue of registrating churches to the Christian Asssociation of Nigeria (CAN), which represents the umbrella body of Christian denominations in the country, instead of doing so through the Corprate Affairs Commission (CAC).
Said he: "We agree and I must say so unequivocally that it is the duty of government to check the activities of religious fraudsters, who masquerade as Christian leaders. However, we must state categorically it is not the duty of government to register churches, because of the unwholesome manner the CAC has been registering churches as if they are free enterprises."
