Motorists, Commutters May Clash with Police From Hammed Shittu in Osogbo Motorists and commuters in Osun State are now poised for showdown with the men of the state Police Command over the collection of toll from them. ThisDayinvestigations revealed in Osogbo at the weekend that the development has forced members of the transport unions in the state to increase transport fares. It was gathered that, the police command has put in place different checkpoints across the 30 local government councils in the state so as to checkmate the activities of criminals. But, since checkpoints were put in place, policemen in the state have turned them into places of tollgates, where they extort money from the motorists and commuters. Sources closed to the transport unions in the state hinted that the policemen charged N20 to N50, depending on how one could bargained with them, adding that the situation was so serious that for instance, "if you are coming from Ibadan to Osogbo through Ife road, you would meet about sixteen checkpoints before reaching Osogbo and the police would collect between N20 to N50 from you." However, the state NURTW in a statement yesterday called on the state police command to reduce the number of checkpoints in the state. The statement signed by the state chairman of the NURTW, Alhaji Adegboyega Tomori, decried the action of the state police command by using the checkpoints to extort money from their members.
