CNPP Berates NLC for Strike Call Off
From Chuks Okocha in Abuja

Conference of Nigeria Politi-cal Parties (CNPP) and Nigerians United for Demo-cracy (NUD) have flayed the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for calling off the nationwide strike at the weekend. The groups described the NLC's action as "too hasty."

In a statement made available to THISDAY and signed by the General Secretary of CNPP/ NUD, Maxi Okwu, the groups said "In our view, the stoppage of the strike was too much in a haste. NLC did not wait for reports from its state congresses to ascertain whether there was obedience to the court order, which ordered the return to the status quo."

CNPP noted that reports from its members all over the country showed that, "only in Abuja and Lagos that the price of petroleum products is selling below N50 per litre. All over the country, the price of fuel, be it petrol (PMS), diesel or kerosene is selling above N50 per litre.

"What is the essence of the strike in the first place, if it is only meant for Abuja and Lagos? In Kaduna, Enugu, Maidugiri, Calabar and other parts of the country, the price of fuel is still over and above N50 per litre and in some cases, as high as N60 per litre."

It wondered how the NLC and the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) arrived at N41.50 per litre, whereas, the Federal High Court directed that the fuel price should be at N38 per litre.

Meanwhile, reacting to Adams Oshiomhole's description of him as a "shameless liar," Ogbeh said the statement was "ungentlemanly," explaining that he has never met Oshiomhole this year, noting that the only time both of them spoke over the fuel crisis was last year October.

The statement signed by the Special Assistant to Ogbeh on Media, Thompson Abu, cautioned the NLC president on the need to apply dialogue and maturity in his dealings.
