Cleric Tasks Journalists on Moral Values Enugu From Emmanuel Ugwu in Enugu Nigerian journalists have been urged to use their profession in promoting the revival of declining moral values in the society. Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Bishop Anthony Gbuji, gave the charge in his message at the church service to usher in this year's press week of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Enugu State Council. In the message read on his behalf by the Vicar General of the diocese, Rev. Fr. Callistus Onaga, Guji noted that the declining moral values should be a source of concern to all honest people. He said the media by virtue of their role as a vehicle for social change should promote the return to the cherished values instead of pandering to the depraved morals plaguing the society in this materialistic world. He warned the media against contents fraught with moral depravity, adding that parents, teachers, pastors and religious teachers should also join in the crusade to uplift moral standards. The Catholic Bishop noted that the profession was facing difficulties, including the onslaught of materialism, which could distort the essence of the profession. But he advised that the influence of materialism should not be allowed to prevail against the noble goals because the modern society cannot do without information that is good, truthful and objective hence these values must be jealously protected from material influence.
