Refocus NEEDS, Cleric Advises Obasanjo Lagos By Oghenekevwe Laba Chairman of The Muslim Congress (TMC), Lagos Chapter, Mikali Tijani, has appealed to President Olusegun Obasanjo to refocus National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS), so as to address the genuine yearnings and aspirations of the people. Tijani who made the appeal yesterday in a welcome address delivered in Lagos at the Third Al-Multaqa, the professional arm of TMC, said "day by day" more and more people are becoming pauperised with recent data released indicating that over 70 percent of the population are living below poverty line. He said something drastic has to be done about the present situation, adding that the much touted dividend of democracy is not being felt by the populace. Describing the incessant increase in the pump price of petroleum products as disheartening and saddening, Tijani said it is ironical that a country which is among the largest producers of crude oil will continue to suffer, advising government to put the four refineries in good working condition so that the nation can substantially obtain petroleum products within, rather than from import which exposes the nation to vagaries of oil prices in international market. He called on government to develop other means of transportation such as railway, adding that if there is alternative means of transportation, the impact of price change on petroleum products will be minimal.
